a gift

Fact is that most of us do better with structure. We like to think random is better, when in all reality; random is just as organized and structured. Random, according to the Apple Dictionary on my computer, means chosen or made without method or conscious decision. Most times we do not see the decision or method used on the surface. Hence the reason we call it random, but just because we cannot recognize a pattern or rule, doesn’t mean it is random. And in all honesty, we couldn’t be truly random even if we tried.

Ask any web or graphic designer what would happen if no structure existed. A website would be one big mess of overlapping images and text. Structure and rules are what make the stuff of life work. Try arranging items on a page or a desktop without using any rules or structure. You can’t do it. You could start out meaning well and seemingly not using any rules, but in the end you would make your own rules about how something fits into the area.

Take an engineer. If he ignored the structure and rules when making a car, a tractor or a building, the result would be a catastrophe.

Structure is there for a reason. It helps us understand content, provide consistency, and enable systems of life to function. We can’t ignore it even if we wanted to.

It’s a gift.

the dark rose

Recently, I planned 2 rose bushes. Today I scanned some of the roses as I do for most objects I find. I'm dedicating this series of prints to my friend Matt Garber, whom we all miss terribly. It was due to his absence that I was prompted to take a walk and in doing so found these first blooms of life.

lenses

Last week I got a new pair of glasses. I put them on as I drove home and was simply amazed how much clearer the world was. It happens every time I get a new pair of glass or a new set of lenses. It’s like my eyes are opened and I can see for the first time.

Perception and sight are a funny thing, aren’t they? We all have lenses with which we view life, some more clouded than others. My previous pair of glasses were usually smudged and full of scratches. Ironically, the new pair has caused me to think a bit about what I haven’t been seeing in my life recently, where have I been falling short, and where can I apply grace and get renewed sight.
